COVID-19 Isolation and Teen Substance Abuse
Adults feel the stress – and teens are not immune. The isolation required with ‘stay at home’ orders and not visiting friends and family has been difficult. Not being able to attend concerts, social events or even go to restaurants has been disheartening and depressing.
For teens – the enforced isolation and lack of social contact has lead to increased internet and social media use. This is not totally positive.
The educational resources available on the internet in 2021 are truly amazing. Unfortunately – there are many less savory areas of the internet available; including the Dark Web.
All of these factors are a perfect storm for increased drug and alcohol use among teens. The impact of COVID-19 and lockdown on mental health of adolescents is serious. Some teens are profoundly depressed while others experience ongoing anxiety. And some adolescents are trending into despair – and using alcohol or drugs to cope.
Fortunately, help is available.
Teen Drug Use Harder to Spot
During COVID-19 Social Isolation
A major sign of teen drug use before the era of COVID-19 was increasing isolation at home. Alternating with insistence of spending more time out with friends.
With coronavirus – everyone is staying at home or within a quarantine ‘bubble’. And isolation is a universal experience.
So what are signs of teen drug use? They can be very subtle.
Signs of Teen Drug Use
“Teens are spending significantly more time at home and greater exposure to headlines regarding COVID-19 can increase anxiety,” said Elisa Trucco, FIU psychology assistant professor and affiliate of the FIU Center for Children and Families. “It’s important that parents talk with their teen about how they are feeling during this time given the increased risk for substance use.”
“Parents should also be more attentive to warning signs of stress and substance use among their teen during this time,” said Trucco.
Possible signs of teen substance use include:
- Increased secretive behavior
- Shifts in personality (e.g., silent, increased mood changes)
- Changes in appearance (e.g., poor hygiene, different odors on clothes).
While stress appears differently in each teenager, it is important to watch for any behavior changes that may include:
- Excessive worrying or sadness
- Unhealthy eating or sleeping habits
- Difficulty with concentration
- Unexplained headaches or body pains.
Parents should do their best in ensuring that all caregivers in the household cope with COVID-19 in a calm and confident manner to provide support for the teen.
Recovery Happens Counseling Services Adolescent Programs
Our commitment is to work closely with the individual and family to help the client become drug free. Our goal then is to discover and treat the underlying issues which supported the emotional dysregulation and addiction.
Our Adolescent Programs: Age Segregated and Age Appropriate
Adolescent outpatient rehab treatment at Recovery Happens Counseling Services is age segregated. Teens will never be placed in adult recovery groups. Recovery education and rehab materials are evidence-based – created and presented to be engaging for teens.
We believe that addiction is a complex but treatable disease – and that a ‘universal’ addiction treatment program is not appropriate for everyone. Each patient receives a complete evaluation, biopsychosocial assessment and personalized treatment plan.
In adolescent substance abuse treatment – our goal is to build a compassionate and therapeutic relationship with each participant. A core element of treatment is to create a safe space in which teens feel comfortable to honestly look at their behavior and choices. And to learn how (and be motivated) to implement positive and sober coping strategies going forward.
Recovery Happens Counseling Services teen programs include dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental health issues. Mental health issues treated include depression, anxiety, trauma and more. Outpatient addiction treatment includes individual counseling and group counseling.
Recovery Happens Founded to Treat Adolescent Substance Abuse
Jon Daily (1970 – 2017) LCSW, CADAAC II founded Recovery Happens in 2007. His addiction treatment work focused on the needs of adolescents and their families. We have retained John’s treatment philosophy – and expanded it to include adults.
Recovery Happens – Founder’s Legacy
Recovery Happens Counseling Services was founded by Jon Daily, LSCW, CADC-II (1970-2017). Jon Daily was an expert in the specialized field of adolescent addiction treatment.
He specialized in the outpatient treatment of adolescents, young adults and their families experiencing addictive disorders and dual diagnosis issues.
The treatment philosophy and models he founded are the basis for treatment today at Recovery Happens Outpatient Rehabs. Treatment focuses first on intervention and treatment to stop the substance use. And then, the focus is educating the whole family.
Jon Daily observed that the progression of addiction is very different in teens than in adults; addictions develop faster in teens. The adolescent brain is still developing. And teen social and family connections are also different from adults.
Few kids recognize they have a problem from the start.
