Why Drug and Alcohol Interventions
Interventions for substance abusers can be a life-saving measure. Intervention is a process that interrupts potentially life-threatening addictions.
Most individuals with an addiction problem will usually not have the ability for impartial insight into how serious their substance abuse or alcohol problem has become.
Also, ‘functional addicts’ will not recognize their addiction and may work successfully for years without addiction treatment. However, addiction takes a terrible toll on personal relationships and families; and on children in particular.
We have access to skilled interventionists who can get help for loved ones before health or career suffers.
Does Silicon Valley Performance Pressure Create Addicts?
Others turn to illegal drugs: Cocaine, Adderall, Meth and Opioids.
Since the ‘Vitamin C’ days in the 1970’s – it has been apparent that cocaine is (in fact) very addictive; and it has a long list of negative health effects. In 2018, cocaine is also now considered by many to be just another ‘cognitive enhancing‘ drug.
Some cocaine users in Silicon Valley are relying on Smart Watches to monitor their binges.
Tech workers, speaking anonymously, told CNBC‘s Christina Farr that they keep an eye on their wrist between lines of drugs to decide whether or not to do more.
Students, coders, tech entrepreneurs and workers in all industries are also taking the prescription stimulant Adderall. For some, this began as a childhood prescription for ADHD. Others obtain and take Adderall illegally, as a smart drug or performance enhancer.
When Adderall becomes too expensive or hard to source – many begin using meth. Not only is meth more addictive – the side effects of routine meth use are truly shocking and health destroying.
The Down Side to Stimulants – Opioids for Insomnia
A functional addiction to illegal performance enhancers (such as Adderall, meth and cocaine) leads to insomnia.
To sleep on command after consuming strong stimulants – many hard core biohackers taking illegal stimulants eventually begin taking opioids to sleep.
An addiction to opioids is serious. Combined with an addiction to stimulants – it is often deadly.
Functional Addiction, High-Functioning Addicts
Is it possible to have a drug addiction or alcohol problem and not know it? Short answer: YES.
“Experts warn that many people with addictions continue to perform well at work. So-called ‘high-functioning addicts’ exist across all sectors. Workplaces are not intervening early enough – which puts those who have addictions at a higher risk of physical and psychological harm.
‘The job is always the last thing that goes,’ says Dr. Steven Melemis, a physician in Toronto who specializes in addiction.” High-Functioning Addicts: Intervening Before Trouble Hits
“High-functioning addiction means we’re looking at functionality only through the window of the workplace … however, any [addiction] takes a terrible toll on families; and on children in particular.”
– Dr. Peter Butt, chair of the physician health program committee at the Saskatchewan Medical Association.
Functional addicts can work successfully for years without addiction treatment.
Eventually though, functional addicts will experience a serious health or legal event that compels them to seek addiction treatment. Often by that time – marriages and (any) children have become dysfunctional and friends have dropped away.
After Intervention – Medical Drug and Alcohol Detox
You (or your friend or loved one) have resolved to stop using drugs or alcohol. Congratulations! This is the first step to regaining sobriety and the importance cannot be underestimated.
Now, medical detox from the addictive substance/s must occur. Recovery support begins with detox from drugs and alcohol. The right detox program helps individuals through physical withdrawal symptoms and provides the medical assistance needed during this rough time.
Is Quitting on Your Own Harmful?
Depending on the individual’s history of abuse and medical and physical conditions – the severity of detox effects will differ.
However, the risks of detox for all serious drug and alcohol users can be dangerous. Detox should never be attempted alone. A sudden stop of drug and alcohol use can lead to seizures, heart attacks and strokes. In severe cases, unsupervised detox can even cause death.
