Key to Lasting Addiction Recovery: Treat the Addiction and any Mental Health Disorders
According to SAMSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Heath Services Administration), regarding co-occurring disorders:
“An important key to a successful recovery is treating both the mental heath disorder and the drug addiction at the same time.
Individuals with mental health disorders are more likely than individuals without mental health disorders to experience an alcohol or substance use disorder. Co-occurring disorders can be difficult to diagnose due to the complexity of symptoms. In many cases, individuals receive treatment for one disorder while the other disorder remains untreated.”
Dual diagnosis addiction recovery requires going beyond a basic treatment of alcoholism or substance abuse. For lasting recovery – addiction rehab treatment needs to identify and heal underlying issues.
Mood disorders, including depression and bipolar disorders, are the most common psychiatric comorbidities (dual diagnosis) among patients with substance use disorders. Anxiety disorders are also very common.
Quality Mental Health Care with Addiction Rehab Treatment
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recently reported that 50 to 75% of persons in substance abuse treatment programs have co-occurring mental illness.
According to SAMHSA’s 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) (PDF | 3.4 MB), approximately 7.9 million adults in the United States had co-occurring disorders (dual diagnosis) in 2014.
Studies have found that many (if not most) people seeking addiction treatment have co-occurring mental health disorders. This includes mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or trauma. All issues need to be addressed in order to sustain long-term recovery. With comprehensive diagnostics and integrated substance use disorder treatment – underlying mental health causes of addiction can be uncovered and treated.
Integrated Evidence-based Addiction Recovery
If an individual has been using alcohol or drugs to self-medicate and ‘treat’ a mental heath issue (such as anxiety, PTSD and more) – mental health issues can sometimes get worse during detox and addiction treatment. With evidence-based integrated treatment, mental health issues can be treated as an integral part of residential rehab.
At New Start Recovery Solutions our mental health professionals perform a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment at admission. An individualized treatment plan unique to each patient is created to address mental health and substance use disorders simultaneously.
If you or a loved one are suffering from addiction as well as PTSD, depression, anxiety, trauma or other mental health issue: Please know that help is available to provide comprehensive, holistic and integrated substance abuse rehab treatment.
Impaired Professionals Evaluation and Treatment
Impaired professionals exist in all professions.
Functional alcoholics and functioning addicts are often found in high stress professions. Due to the levels of work stress – high functioning addicts often begin to feel ‘entitled’ to drink or drug heavily. However, the health effects of daily substance abuse will catch up with the individual – sooner or later.
Professions that experience high levels of alcoholism and substance abuse include first responders, attorneys, doctors and medical professionals, airline pilots, Silicon Valley tech professionals and more.
Any intense work environment with high stress and pressure to perform is at risk for development of alcohol use disorder.
Medical Drug and Alcohol Detox
You (or your friend or loved one) have resolved to stop using drugs or alcohol.
Congratulations! This is the first step to regaining sobriety and the importance cannot be underestimated.
Now, medical detox from the addictive substance/s must occur. Recovery support begins with detox from drugs and alcohol. The right detox program helps individuals through physical withdrawal symptoms and provides the medical assistance needed during this rough time.
At our Northern California drug and alcohol rehab center locations – medical detox is designed to provide our patients with support they need. Recovery support continues with New Start Recovery Solutions integrated and holistic addiction rehab to give those addicted the foundation and tools to begin to live a clean and sober life.
