Dual Diagnosis Integrated Treatment
According to the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS) – about 45% of Americans seeking substance use disorder treatment have been diagnosed with a co-occurring mental disorder.
Dual Diagnosis or Co-occurring Disorders refers to individuals who have both a mental heath issue (such as PTSD, depression, trauma) and an addiction problem (substance use disorder, or SUD).
Integrated Treatment is needed for lasting recovery for individuals with dual diagnosis. This means addiction treatment with multidisciplinary teams. Treatment teams include mental health professionals and substance abuse specialists working together to provide individualized addiction recovery treatment and relapse prevention.
If you are experiencing addiction and PTSD, depression, trauma or other mental health issue – please know that seeking help is the first step to addiction recovery and regaining control of your life.
Trauma Treatment and Recovery
What is Psychological Trauma? A traumatic event or situation creates psychological trauma when it overwhelms the individual’s ability to cope. Individuals experiencing trauma can feel emotionally, cognitively, and physically overwhelmed.
Trauma may begin as acute stress from a perceived life-threat. This can include powerful one-time incidents like accidents, natural disasters, crimes, surgeries, deaths, and other violent events.
For example, the survivors of Paradise Camp Fire – driving on the only road out of town surrounded by a growing fire and not knowing if they would survive – experienced trauma.
Or trauma can be the result of cumulative and repetitive stress. This includes events such as child abuse, neglect, combat, urban violence, concentration camps, battering relationships, and enduring deprivation. Both acute stress and ongoing stress can create trauma that seriously impairs the ability to function with resilience or experience inner peace. Acute or ongoing stress conditions can create (or trigger) physical and emotional trauma, PTSD, overwhelm, and stress related conditions.
When alcohol or drugs are used as a ‘coping’ mechanism for trauma or PTSD – a strong addictive cycle starts. The chains of addiction can be broken. However, without treating the root cause (trauma) – a lasting recovery and return to sober living will be difficult.

Recovery from Trauma
There is hope – trauma recovery is possible! Recovery from trauma is an integrative treatment process involving the mind, body and spirit.
Treatment plans are unique to each individual. Medication, if needed, will be prescribed by our medical doctor.
Trauma resolution therapy is provided by our licensed mental health professionals experienced in trauma therapy. Therapy includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and mindfulness training.
Other therapies may also be included. PTSD treatment is available for veterans; and anyone experiencing post traumatic stress symptoms.
Relapse Prevention – Mindfulness and More

Relapse prevention in recovery begins with a plan. We help each patient develop a unique relapse prevention plan that will work for them.
In early recovery, it is best to avoid relapse triggers. Avoiding relapse triggers can include family gatherings if drinking and drugs will be present.
But as recovery and sobriety become more stable – it is possible to prevent relapse even when addictive substances are present. A relapse prevention plan is critical at this point.
Tools for Relapse Prevention: A Relapse Plan and Mindfulness
- With a relapse prevention plan in place – you don’t have to relapse to work the plan. Relapse prevention becomes a daily routine.
- Mindfulness is the method to implement relapse prevention.
Letting Go and Moving Forward with Mindfulness

“You only have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
~ Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
Mindfulness is developing the internal focus to be quietly aware of your own thoughts and impulses – without judgment. And, without acting on habitual impulses.
Although it is definitely not easy – positive growth and positive changes are possible even from the most tragic of circumstances and trauma. Mental health and balance can be restored.
Lasting recovery from substance abuse requires a total re-assessment of habitual behaviors and habitual thinking patterns.
Addiction recovery (and recovery from traumatic events) requires a greater degree of self-knowledge. And a leap into the unknown of more positive choices is needed. For most, this process also results in inner spiritual growth.
